Questions, answered
If yours is not here, call 813-586-0766 or email pickups@tampabaybookpickup.com and ask. We answer everything.
Is pickup really free?
Yes. There is no charge, no fuel fee and no minimum spend. We make our money on the books that are worth selling, which is what makes the trip pay for itself rather than costing you anything.
Do you resell the books?
Yes, and we would rather say so than dress it up. We are book resellers. The titles with a real market get listed and sold, and that revenue is what pays for a free pickup with no charge to you. Everything else goes to our $1 community book sale, Little Free Libraries, children's hospital wards and Friends of the Library bookstores. The full breakdown is here.
How many books do I need for a pickup?
At least 30 items, and books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and video games all count. Below that the drive costs more than the load is worth, so we ask you to drop them off instead at 5266 State Road 54 in New Port Richey, Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm.
Is my donation tax deductible?
No. We are a business rather than a registered charity, so we cannot issue a tax receipt. If a deduction is what you need, a nonprofit thrift store or your library's Friends group is the better fit, and we are happy to point you to one.
What happens to the books after you take them?
They get sorted. The ones with resale value are listed online and sold. The rest are handled as described on our what happens to your books page, which covers our community book sale, Little Free Libraries, hospital wards and Friends of the Library bookstores.
Do you take everything in the box, or do you pick through it?
For pickups we take the whole lot, so you are not left with the leftovers. The only exception is the short list on our what we cannot take page, and mold is the one we are strict about.
Do I have to be home?
No, and most people are not. Box the books, leave them somewhere sheltered, and we collect them on your route day any time between 8am and 8pm — Mondays for Pinellas and west Pasco, Fridays for Hillsborough and east Pasco. A covered porch, a carport, a garage with the code, or a building front desk all work. Tell us the arrangement in the notes box on the form and we will confirm it.
What day will you come?
We run fixed weekly routes, so it depends where you are.
- Mondays: all of Pinellas County, plus west Pasco meaning Trinity and west
- Fridays: all of Hillsborough County, plus central and east Pasco such as Land O' Lakes and Wesley Chapel
- Wednesdays: large collections anywhere, by arrangement
We reply the same business day with the next date that works. If you are up against a closing or a move-out, say so on the form and we will tell you honestly whether we can make it.
Do I need to box them up?
Yes, please, and the boxes are your side of it. We do not carry spares, so books still loose on shelves are the one thing that will hold up a pickup.
Small boxes beat large ones, because books get heavy faster than anyone expects. Grocery stores give away banana boxes for free and they are close to perfect: strong, the right size, and with handles. Liquor stores are the other good source. Do not tape them shut, we sort as we load. And if a few strays end up loose in a bag, nobody is going to mind.
Do you pay for books?
Not for ordinary household collections, no. Pickup is a free service, not a buying service. If you believe you have something genuinely rare or valuable, say so and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth getting appraised somewhere else.
Why can you only come on certain days?
Because grouping several pickups in one area into a single trip is a large part of how we can afford to do this for free. A fixed route also means we are reliably in your neighborhood every week, rather than making one long drive for one collection.
What areas do you cover?
Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough County. See the service areas page for the towns we drive to most. If you are just outside and have a large collection, ask anyway.
