Donate books in Hillsborough County
Free collection from homes across Tampa and the eastern suburbs, every Friday. Thirty items and we come to you, at no charge, however far east you are.
Looking to donate books near me in Tampa?
Most people asking that question have more books than a car boot and no obvious place to take them. Thrift stores take a bag. Library Friends groups take what suits their own sale and rarely have the storage for a house clearance. What we do instead is come to you: box the books, leave them somewhere sheltered such as a porch or a garage, tell us where on the form, and the van collects them on the Friday run. You do not need to be home and nothing goes to the curb.
The minimum is thirty items, and books, DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks, cassettes, video games, board games and puzzles all count toward it.
One day for the whole county, and why
Hillsborough is the longest run we make. From the warehouse on State Road 54 it is a genuine cross-bay drive before a single box is loaded, and doing that for one collection at a time would be the fastest way to start charging for a free service. So the entire county goes on Fridays, grouped, which is also why an early request tends to get a better window.
We collect across Hyde Park, Seminole Heights, Ybor City, Tampa Heights, Davis Islands, Palma Ceia, Carrollwood, Westchase, New Tampa, Channelside, Riverside Heights, Sulphur Springs, Temple Terrace, Town 'n' Country, Bloomingdale, Valrico, Riverview, FishHawk Ranch, Lithia, Seffner and Dover, and everywhere else inside the county line. The two Hillsborough pages with the local detail are here:
Estates, whole libraries and garage clearances get a dedicated Wednesday trip with the right vehicle instead of riding the Friday route. See estate and large collections or our book removal service.

What we take, and the little we cannot
Books of every kind, including textbooks of any age and ex-library copies with stamps, spine labels, jacket covers and security strips still on them. Alongside books we take DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks on CD, cassette tapes, video games, board games and puzzles, which matters here because a Tampa house clearance is rarely books alone.
What we cannot take is short and mostly about condition: VHS tapes, mass-market paperbacks, encyclopedia sets, Reader’s Digest Condensed volumes, magazines and newspapers, and anything with mould, water or insect damage. In a Florida garage that last one does the most damage, so if a box smells musty, keep it separate and tell us rather than letting it travel with the rest. Full accepted list and what we cannot take.
A Friday collection, step by step
You send the form with a rough count and the address. We reply the same business day, usually within a few hours, confirming the Friday. On the day a van works a planned list across the county, so you get a window rather than an appointment: any time between 8am and 8pm, and you do not need to be home for it.
City collections and suburban ones fail in different ways, so it is worth saying which you are. In South Tampa, Hyde Park and Ybor the problem is usually access: street parking, a narrow driveway, a condo with a service door round the side. In Brandon, Valrico, Riverview and FishHawk it is almost never access and almost always volume, because a two car garage holds a great deal more than people estimate. Either way, a sentence on the form saves a phone call.
Large collections and house clearances in Tampa
A room of shelves, a teacher’s career worth of classroom books or a garage that has quietly become a storeroom does not ride the Friday route. Those get a dedicated Wednesday trip with the right vehicle and enough hands, anywhere in the county, and we call to book a time instead of giving you a window. If a closing date or a move is driving it, put that date on the form and it gets priority routing.
Where can I donate books in Pasco, Pinellas or Hillsborough?
All three counties, same terms: free collection at thirty items, and a drop-off at 5266 State Road 54, New Port Richey, weekdays 10am to 5pm with no minimum. Being straight about geography: that address is in Pasco, roughly an hour from most of Hillsborough, so the drop-off suits Pasco and north Pinellas donors and the collection is what makes sense here. If you happen to be crossing for the $1 book sale on the 4th Saturday, bring them then.
Book donations near me: what Hillsborough donors ask first
The question we get most from this side of the bay is whether the distance means a catch somewhere: a fuel charge, a minimum spend, a request to meet halfway. There is none. The Friday grouping is the whole answer, and it is the reason the service can be free at this range when a junk removal crew would price the same load by the space it takes in the truck.
The second question is what happens if the pile is bigger than expected once the shelves are actually empty. Tell the driver, or reply to the confirmation email. A larger load usually still fits; a much larger one moves to a Wednesday trip with a bigger vehicle, and neither costs anything. What we would rather avoid is arriving for thirty items and finding three hundred with no room to take them, because that means a second trip for both of us.
What happens to books collected in Hillsborough
They travel back to New Port Richey, and every box is opened and gone through by hand. We are booksellers, so the titles with a real market are listed and sold, and that is what pays for the van that came to get them. Nothing is weighed in or pulped because it was quicker than looking.
Much of the rest goes onto the tables at our monthly $1 sale, which raises money for the Friends of South Holiday Library and the Friends of the Clearwater Library System, both of which are Pasco and Pinellas groups. We work with library and Friends groups on this side of the bay as well, and we leave partners unnamed here unless they have told us they are happy to be listed. Books also reach Little Free Library volunteers, children’s hospital wards and local literacy projects.

Hillsborough County questions
Where can I donate books in Hillsborough County?
We collect free from homes right across the county, from South Tampa and Ybor out to Riverview, Valrico and FishHawk. Thirty items is the minimum for a collection, and books, DVDs, CDs and games all count toward it. Our drop-off is at 5266 State Road 54 in New Port Richey, which is a genuine drive from most of Hillsborough, so the collection is what most people here use.
What day do you collect in Hillsborough?
Fridays, for the whole county. Hillsborough is the longest run we make, so it gets one fixed day rather than being fitted around the coastal routes. Get the request in before Friday and you are usually on that week’s run.
Do you cover Brandon, Riverview and Valrico as well as Tampa?
Is there a minimum for a Hillsborough collection?
Thirty items. It exists because a van crossing the bay for one bag of books costs more than the books are worth, and holding to it is what keeps the service free for everyone else. If you are under thirty, hold them until after a clear-out or ask a local Friends group.
Where do books collected in Hillsborough actually go?
Back to our New Port Richey warehouse, where every box is sorted by hand. What sells is listed, and much of the rest goes to our monthly $1 sale, which raises money for the Friends of South Holiday Library and the Friends of the Clearwater Library System, both of which are Pasco and Pinellas groups. We work with library and Friends groups in Hillsborough too, and we do not name partners on a public page without asking them first.
